Graphics Overview

The corporate message of any company is crucial to its success in the marketplace. The marketing emphasis is directly related to the function of that company. That function may change by, for example, expansion of company portfolio or, simply, by new avenues of communication being available.

A major example of this is the internet. It is the case that all major institutions and companies have embraced the web as a mainstream communication tool. In so doing, the way that company presents itself visually is as important as all other means of advertising.

The web, however, does offer a unique way of promoting a company. It is an amalgam of what, in graphic design terms, was always seen as separate activities - brochures, catalogues, flyers, magazine and film ads etc.

Of course these means of communication are still with us but the web can incorporate all of these in one site.

The graphic design challenge is to acknowledge that a site has differing elements that reflects the identity of the organization, what it does and how it connects with its market. Therefore the nature of the information and the way that information is presented forms an intrinsic part of the company's selling proposition.

Images used on the web should be:

  1. output size required for page
  2. enlarging decreases quality
  3. reducing file - larger file still requires to be downloaded
  4. consider cross-platform viewing (Web Safe palettes)
